Death
the future of death / when does the beginning suddenly appear?

performance
- installation

People (approx. 40) of all ages and background are buried under earth in front of a live audience.

A person enters the space and lies down. A 2nd person enters carrying earth, buries the 1st and lies down. A 3rd enters, buries the 2nd and lies down. A 4th buries the 3rd and lies down. Audience members may also lie down.

An evolving body of work exploring the interrelationship between life and death, which took root during a 3 month residency at Parc de la Villette, Paris. During this time A2 spent a month with the terminally ill in palliative care to research and discover - the changes of heart made (if any) on the verge of death, and how this knowledge can be put into practice in our lives now.

….We were advised not to mention the word death. For the first two visits we used the word life instead...Read the residency diary A2 in Paris, May 2005

installation

People sit holding photographs of deceased loved ones and family members.

A work which aims to explore the themes of presence and absence, the relationship between photography and mortality, between the ephemerality of life and our need for memorialisation, and between the viewer’s desire to see and know, and their discomfort at the possibly intrusive nature of such a gaze.
